What do you get when you mix:
a. A prolific british director known for genre spanning movies (like Trainspotting,28 Days Later,Shallow Grave and 2007's best Sci fi movie Sunshine)
b. The City that never sleeps
and
c. Game Shows?
Ans: Slumboy Millionaire. Yep , a movie based in Mumbai, about the story of a slumboy who enters a quiz show with the attempt to gain attention of a girl who he dotes on and who is an ardent follower of the show. The screenplay is written by Simon Beaufoy, who also did "The Full Monty" and is based on "Q and A" by Vikas Swarup. What is really exciting is the fact that this is an adaptation by an English director ,scripted by an Englishman on a novel by an Indian Diplomat based on a slumdweller from aamchi Mumbai.
Danny Boyle has been one of my favourite directors and I am eagerly awaiting this movies US release.Apparently, the screening of this movie at the TIFF was spectacular. In the post screening talk with the public, Danny Boyle even mentioned watching RGV's Company and Satya (both based out of Mumbai), for those who needed some background on Bollywood and movies based on Mumbai.
WooHoo!
Go Boyle!
Go Slumdog Millionaire.

Q:Who Imma gonna call?

Ans: All my friends who fell in love with Ghostbusters the first time they saw it.
GameInformer had carried an article on a console based video game on the Ghostbusters movie. In the article almost everyone was unanimous in stating that they were ONLY making a video game and no movie was in the works. But that convergence of our most beloved 80s characters was enough to light the hearts of millions all around the world. What if...they reunited and made GhostBusters 3?
December 2007: Yeah, right.
September 2008: Yeah! Right..it's on!!
So, Who you gonna call?

Hanging out with Superior Glotka

Joe Abercrombie had been keeping me busy."The first law:Book Two- Before they are hanged" is more dashing, more page turning and more dramatic than Joe's debut fantasy novel, "The first law:Book One-The Blade Itself". If you consider yourself to be a devout follower of the Fantasy genre, this series should be a part of your collection.
I believe the Point of View (P.o.V) setting of this series, quite similar in fashion to George R.R. Martin's epic "A song of Ice and Fire", is a refreshing change from other fantasy series.A few critics have pointed out that the series lacks a sense of "world building" ability,a necessary quality in most fantasy novels. However, Abercrombie makes up for it by concentrating on a few key elements.Namely a Plot. And strong characters.Very interesting characters at that. The dialogue and the interplay between the characters is exceptionally entertaining. There is the vain ,spoiled and handsome Captain Luthar , the crippled and diabolic Superior Glotka. Bayaz,A legendary magician hailing from an era that everyone has forgotten to Logen Ninefingers, a simple minded but admirable barbarian from the north where he is a living legend of sorts. The book is laced with dark humor and a lot of humorous sequences.
Even the ancillary characters like Captain West and the Northmen have distinct personas that draw you into the novel, making it an entertaining and compulsive read.

Believe it (or not)
If the music at 00:35 seconds into the trailer doesn't send goosebumps up your arms, then you don't need to see this movie.

Top 10 Movie A.I./Andriods/Cyborgs - Day 3
#8 Alex Murphy Aka Robocop
Remember when , almost everyone in school was pretending to be this robot with pencils and pens attached to hands like pseudo- guns. And that very famous walk. I do. And I am sure some of you do as well. I am talking about "Robocop" (1987). Inspired by Judge Dredd and for that matter ,Iron Man, RoboCop was directed by Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct,Starship Troopers) and supposedly even Arnold Schwarzenegger was in talks to play the part, but it went to a relatively unknown Peter Weller.
For anyone growing up in the 80s, this character was the epitome of uber cool.Robocop had the voice, the looks and the goods to take down the bad guys and appeal to the senses of the viewer, especially kids. An interesting note on this character-Murphy-the cop, comes off as cold, effective and almost mechanical human being. But fter being mortally wounded and winding up as a cyborg, he reaches out to his fellow human beings and during the course of the movie, gets in touch with his humanity. Everybody wanted to be Robocop. Until Terminator:2 came out.
Trivia: The writer of the movie came up with the idea when he passed the sets of another great movie, "Blade runner".

Top 10 Movie A.I./Andriods/Cyborgs - Day 2
CBS was airing AFI's 10 top 10 ,yesterday. What a coincidence. Things are getting more and more spookier ( and paranoid) as the X files movie's release day keeps approaching. Weird.
Continuing on the list, at #9 we have a baddie, playing a baddie.
9. Russell Crowe as - SID 6.7 from the movie Virtuosity (1995).
SID 6.7 is an "evil program" which escapes the virtual world by transplanting into an android body and successfully ports into the real world.
SID stands for Sadistic, Intelligent, and Dangerous and this badass piece of code is derived from the personality traits of 183 criminals, mass murderers and serial killers.Another interesting aspect of this deranged code is SID can reprogram its code and thereby make itself better.
In short, it is a powerful ,mad machine which wreaks havoc from the word go, until it is shut down by Denzel Washington. This was one of Crowes early works, when he was more famous for being a cast member in a ridiculous western(The Quick and the Dead) than a Gladiator.
Crowe acts the part of an inhuman murdering machine with relative ease and since there is no aspect of right or wrong present, he doesn't have to face the ramifications of his actions. He does look a whole lot whack and I wonder how he would approach the role if he played it now.
